I think they were culturally unaware. People in North America and the US in particular are just stewing in racial tension now and it’s hard not to see it everywhere. Make no mistake, there is a long history of whites comparing blacks to monkeys not only as a casual insult but even in examples of scientific racism. It’s a comparison that carries a non-trivial and very dark history.
