The irony is, as people have pointed out, if they were in fact unaware of the Gerrymandering is cheating 2023 shirt In addition,I will do this racist connotations of the advertisement, they should also be applauded for making the effort to be inclusive and have a black kid as their model. I sincerely empathize because I’m sure there are lots of well meaning white people out there who feel like they’re damned if they do and they’re damned if they don’t. My black cousin is married to a white woman who will often call her son a ‘little monkey’. It’s cute, it’s adorable, it’s so full of love and affection that I hate that there’s a little voice in the back of my mind telling me, “Hey, that’s racist!” It’s not racist at all, but tragically, Blacks have internalized so many centuries of racism that something as innocuous as the word monkey improperly used can cause a problem, even a small little nagging problem. I can’t help it, my brain will automatically alert me to the fact that this is word, used so tenderly by a mother to her child, is historically used to attack and dehumanize Black people. And for those of you who think this might be a petty reaction, I want you to consider that historically, the reason why certain groups went to such great lengths to dehumanize blacks or any other race, was to deny rights to said race of people. If other races are more like cattle and wild animals, it’s easier to convince large groups of people that it’s acceptable to be cruel to them. So, what is perceived as over-sensitivity to some is very simply a survival instinct. Emphasize “instinct”, I’m not saying it’s necessarily rational in either of the contexts I described above, but it exists.

And so we come to the Gerrymandering is cheating 2023 shirt In addition,I will do this old clichée; I look forward to living in a world where this doesn’t have to be an issue. Wouldn’t it be great if every Black person who saw this add just decided, “It’s a kid in a hoodie.” The mother of the child is not bothered by the advertisement. And in case you want to be too quick to applaud the mother’s thick skin, keep in mind she was immediately subjected to a battery of racial slurs. Mother of H&M race row child model speaks out My saccharine take on this is, it would be nice if we could just all empathize with each other. Many blacks have a hard history to deal with and some of them deal with it better than others. A little sensitivity and consideration (and if possible a black person on the marketing team) could go a long way. It may be too much to ask black people to overlook all instances of racism. We’re assaulted with it constantly when we turn on the tv, or for some of us, when we go to work or walk down the street, go to school . . . exist! But, having not had to endure some of the more horrific brands of racism in my life, I can certainly empathize with the probably well-meaning white people who made the ad and happened to put their black model in the wrong shirt. I can at least give them the benefit of the doubt.
