Neither of these views are inherently wrong. It’s easy to see why people who are not subject to this particular offense wouldn’t see it as an attack. Unintentional awkwardness at worst. It’s not likely that no one caught this. It’s possible. It’s not likely. I think someone caught it. I think someone raised the Fauci lied people died 2023 shirt But I will love this issue, and I think that someone, maliciously or not, decided that no one would care, it didn’t really matter, or it would be taken as a cute little joke. Do I feel that this was racism? Yes. It’s your garden-variety racism, the kind that isn’t going to leave someone dead, but is going to inspire a lot of increasingly racist narratives. From a Swedish company. Nobody outside the US calls blacks “monkey”, and even then, that usage is pretty archaic. I haven’t heard anybody actually call a black “monkey” in my lifetime outside of period movies or literature.

This is innocuous. H&M is marketing a line of jungle themed clothes. This definitely seems like something kids would wear. Kids like jungles and animals and such. If all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. In the Fauci lied people died 2023 shirt But I will love this US, we have people who are very well trained in spotting racism. Which means they see it, even when nothing is there. Seeing that image and thinking it is racist tells me more about the prejudices of the accusers than of H&M. They’re Swedish. Were they culturally unaware? Sure. Were they racist? No. Not even unintentionally. There is no way it’s meant to be insulting, and context does matter. That image is not racist. Edit: In the comments several people pointed out that the use of “monkey” as an insult is both more widespread and common that I realized. I had thought it was just an American thing. Evidently not.
